HANOK

IN SAMCHEONGDONG

The Hanok (Korean traditional house) is situated on the side of a very impressive rock cliff, in the center of the old Seoul.

When we discovered the house, all the courtyards, every outdoor space had been completely covered and re-built with diverse materials, leaving little light to enter the rooms.

골목안 축대 위로 보이는 한옥 대문은 사람을 끄는 힘이 있었다. 집안으로 들어서 보니, 안마당, 옆마당, 뒷마당은 시대별 유행 건축 재료들로 뒤덮여 건폐율 100%이었고, 기존 방과 대청 마루는 창고와 다름없이 어두웠다.

덧대진 구조물들을 걷어내자, 뒷마당의 축대와 암석들이 드러났고 앞마당과 옆마당의 크기도 좋고 밝았다.

동네 다른 한옥집들에 비해 바깥 공간이 여유롭고 독특했다.

After the house was stripped off from this accumulation of additions and repairs, we discovered the beauty of the original structure, a Miesian space, sheltered by a powerful roof.

Despite the renovation had to be in historical style, we intended to preserve the qualities of transparency and fluidity between inside and outside.

The traditional elements of ornamented panels are used as filters for this now bright and quiet space.

우리는 집의 본래 모습을 찾아주고, 마당들이 시각적으로 연결되게 하여, 원래 한옥 평면 구조의 미스(미스 반 데 로)한 성격을 강화시켜 주고 싶었다.

한편, 매우 전통적인 건축 언어만이 허용되었다.

그래서 창문이 유난히 많은 집이 되었고, 문살이 많은 전통식 창문들은 공간의 빛과 투명성을 조절해주는 건축 요소가 되어주었다.
