SEOUL PERFORMING ART CENTER

NODEUL ISLAND

The City of Seoul held three competitions to select projects for the arts center in 2005 and 2006. the 2005 International Idea Competition for the Seoul Performing Arts Center, the 2006 Domestic Competition for the Outdoor Theater for Youth, and the 2006 Invited International Competition for the Seoul Performing Arts Center. In 2006, we competed with Jean Nouvel, Dominique Perrault and four other architects, proposing projects that would make Nodeul Island a meaningful public space and a positive example for Seoul¡¯s future residents.

This project not only aims at giving the island an identity but at connecting both sides of the river. For SPAC to be a focal point of the cultural development of Seoul, it needed to have a powerful visual impact, reaching the scale of the wide river landscape, the huge walls of surrounding apartment buildings, as well as the riverside highways and bridges. On the north facade, the part facing the city, SPAC has the power of a monument of ambiguous nature, as its profile and colors change and evolve depending on the position of the viewer.

The saekdong hanbok (multicolored traditional Korean costume) color composition was used to impart a special rhythm to the north facade. On the south side, where a garden is located, the transparent facade folds, opening up to the light and the river landscape.

The opera house audience is densely rassembled around its front stage in a space shaped in the Baroque tradition, a world of illusion that was designed to be as close as possible to the audience, at less than 20 meters.
